Five posts ago, we started with a simple observation: the consumer of your next interface is as likely to be an LLM as a developer. Now it's time to follow that thread to its conclusion.

Thesis: The convergence of self-describing capabilities, headless architecture, negotiated integrations, and democratized building points toward a future where the "app" is a composition of capabilities assembled by agents — and the organizations that treat their capability layer as a product will have a structural advantage over those still shipping monolithic interfaces.


This is Post 6 of 6 — the capstone of The Interface Inflection series. Previously: Interfaces Are Changing established the paradigm shift. The Convergence

In three to five years, the lines between "API," "UI," and "integration" blur significantly.

  1. APIs become self-describing. MCP-style protocols are the norm, not the exception. Capabilities advertise what they do, what they accept, and how they relate to each other — in natural language, not just type signatures.
  2. UIs become optional. Conversational and agent interfaces handle a growing share of tasks that once required dedicated screens. The web app doesn't vanish — it becomes one consumer among many.
  3. Integrations become negotiated. Pre-built connectors still exist for high-volume paths, but the default for new connections is dynamic composition at runtime.
  4. The "app" becomes a composition. Users or agents assemble capabilities from multiple MCP servers into bespoke experiences that no product team anticipated.

None of these are predictions from scratch. Each one is already happening — this series documented the evidence. The forecast is about rate and degree, not direction.

Conversational vs. Visual: It's About the Task

Are we all moving to chat? No. But the boundary between conversational and visual interfaces is shifting — and it's shifting based on task, not platform.

The key insight: the interface should match the task, not the platform. MCP enables this by decoupling capability from presentation. The same capability surface serves a dashboard, a chat agent, and a scheduled pipeline — each head optimized for its task type.

I've personally moved from UI IDEs to terminal-based development with agents. MCP has become my primary interface to platforms I use daily — not because the web UIs are bad, but because conversational interaction is faster for how I work. That said, I still use dashboards for monitoring and visual tools for design review. Different tasks, different interfaces. The shift isn't from visual to conversational. It's from one-interface-per-platform to best-interface-per-task.

MCP Servers as Product

MCP servers are becoming a distribution channel for platform capabilities. Cursor plugins package MCP servers with rules and skills. Claude Desktop uses MCP servers as "apps." Any agentic framework that supports the MCP specification can consume them.

This means MCP server design is product design. The quality of your MCP server determines how well agents can use your platform.

What makes a good MCP server, viewed through a product lens:

  1. Self-describing tools with clear schemas and natural language descriptions — these are your new onboarding flow
  2. Progressive disclosure — simple operations are simple; complex operations are structured, not hidden
  3. Validation and guardrails built in — the MCP layer prevents bad calls, not just reports them
  4. Resources that provide domain knowledge — not just data access, but context that helps agents make good decisions
  5. Feedback mechanisms — how does agent usage data flow back to improve the product?

As we explored in The MCP Mental Model, the protocol isn't just plumbing. It's the interface between your platform's capabilities and every agent that will ever use them.

The App as Composition

The future pattern: users or agents assemble capabilities from multiple MCP servers into bespoke experiences that no single product team designed.

Consider a compliance officer who needs to audit employee access. Today, this requires four separate tools, four logins, and manual copy-paste:

With MCP-native agents, it's one request: "Audit Q1 access for the engineering team against our SOX controls and generate the compliance report." The agent discovers the relevant tools across all four servers, composes the workflow, and delivers the result. No pre-built integration required. No middleware team involved.

The best interface is the one that disappears. When agents compose capabilities across servers, the user sees a result — not the plumbing.

The Opportunity Cost Question

Here's the honest check on the vision. From the discussions that shaped this series: it becomes possible to build anything within imagination — however, with the overhead of opportunity cost and LLM costs. The question is where the balance falls.

The constraints are real:

  • LLM reasoning isn't free. Every negotiated integration carries a compute cost that pre-built integrations avoid.
  • Not everything should be dynamic. High-volume critical paths need optimized, pre-built wiring.
  • The skill curve shifts, not disappears. Someone still designs the capabilities, writes the descriptions, and governs the layer.
  • Governance overhead grows with flexibility. More freedom demands more guardrails.

The framework: use negotiated and dynamic composition for exploration and low-volume diversity. Harden into pre-built integrations for high-volume critical paths. The balance point depends on your compute budget, risk tolerance, and how diverse your consumer base is.

The Counterargument

Predictions about interfaces are notoriously wrong. Video phones were predicted for decades before Zoom. Voice interfaces were "the future" for twenty years before they became useful for anything beyond timers and weather.

The specific predictions in this post may be wrong. The timeline may be off. The exact patterns may evolve.

But the directional bets are safer than the specifics:

  1. Interfaces will become more agent-consumable, not less
  2. Self-describing capabilities will grow, not shrink
  3. The consumer set for any given capability will expand, not contract
  4. Dynamic composition will complement static integrations, not replace them entirely

These trends are already in production. This series documented real, working examples — not prototypes.

What Builders Should Do Now

These aren't predictions to wait for. They're actions to take today.

  1. Design capabilities, not just UIs. Every new feature should be consumable by agents, not just humans.
  2. Invest in descriptions. Tool schemas and natural language descriptions are the new API docs. Make them excellent.
  3. Build headless first. Any UI is then just one consumer of your capability layer.
  4. Start a semantic layer. Even a thin MCP wrapper over your top five APIs changes the game.
  5. Embrace the multi-head model. Your web app is a valued head. So is every agent that discovers your capabilities.
  6. Govern the layer. Version schemas, audit tool usage, gate production access.
  7. Measure agent adoption. Track how agents use your MCP server — this is your new engagement metric.

These are interesting times. Not because the technology is novel — protocols and service buses have existed for decades — but because the consumer has changed. When the consumer can reason about your capabilities, discover them at runtime, and compose them on the fly, the entire integration stack simplifies. The organizations that treat their capability layer as a first-class product — well-described, well-governed, multi-headed — will have a structural advantage over those still shipping one UI and calling it done.
